About ISTS

Previous Symposium, the 27th ISTS in Tsukuba

ISTS (International Symposium on Space Technology and Science) is the most popular international conference in Japan concerning space technology and science. Its objectives are to encourage specialists of space engineering, space science, space medical and space law to exchange information through presentations and to promote space related activities. ISTS is organized biennially. Since the first symposium was held in 1959 in Tokyo, Japan, ISTS has been held constantly, recently biennially, in Japan and the 27th ISTS in 2009 was the 50th anniversary of ISTS.

The last 5 symposia were held in the following cities, the 23rd in Matsue in 2002, the 24th in Miyazaki in 2004, the 25th in Kanazawa in 2006, the 26th in Hamamatsu in 2008 and the 27th in Tsukuba in 2009. The last (27th) symposium whose main theme was “Toward the Next 50 Years !” was held successfully in Tsukuba from July 5 till July 12 in 2009 in cooperation with some related organizations with 789 attendants from 25 countries and 515 presentations.
